BIO
Charlotte is Professor of History at Victoria University of Wellington Te Herenga Waka. She is a historian of empires and colonies, with a focus on gender and women. Her research is principally concerned with the British colony of New Zealand in the 19thC. Her current major project is a history of the British garrison world, c.1840-70, supported by a Marsden Fund grant, with a major monograph scheduled for publication in 2024. Charlotte is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi, and has recently completed a 3-year term as Chair of the Academy of Fellows at the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi (2020-2023). Her valedictory address can be found here

Charlotte has been President of the New Zealand Historical Association on two occasions. She is currently a Board member of the UNESCO Memory of the World Trust; the New Zealand convenor of the International Federation for Research in Women's History, and a member of the editorial board of the British Journal of Military History, amongst other offices.
Since June 2020 she has co-convened the Aotearoa Women's and Gender History Network with Dr Charlotte Greenhalgh (University of Waikato). With generous funding from the History Innovation Fund, Waipapa Taumata Rau - University of Auckland, the Network met in person for a 2-day symposium in February 2023. Selected papers will appear in a forthcoming special issue of the New Zealand Journal of History. The Network meets online on a roughly 6-week basis.
Charlotte graduated with a BA (Victoria University of Wellington), BA (Hons, First Class) Massey University, and PhD (University of Auckland/London School of Economics).
Charlotte's earliest publications appeared in the work of collectives; she has continued to enjoy collaborative work of many kinds and particularly relishes the constant discovery that History allows - and demands.
