BIO

Joanne Harvey leads the Organic Synthesis research team at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington's School of Chemical and Physical Sciences (SCPS). Applications of our chemistry research are directed towards drug discovery, environmental issue and food additives. Our drug discovery efforts are inspired by natural products, and employ structure-based computational methods and medicinal chemistry. We have developed new synthetic methods and extended known chemistry.

Joanne studied at Victoria University of Wellington, graduating with a BSc (Hons) in chemistry. She conducted her PhD in synthetic organic chemistry at the Australian National University under the supervision of Professor Martin Banwell. Dr Harvey worked at the University of York, supported by Anglo-Australian and Ramsay Memorial Trust post-doctoral fellowships. Joanne is delighted to be part of the academic staff at her alma mater, and delights in understanding and communicating the awesome chemical world we live in, being part of the student learning experience and developing new scientists and awesome citizens.
