I am Professor of Computer Graphics but my research goes wider than that. I have worked on 3D television, where I designed and analysed TV displays that do not need the silly glasses. With my research group, I've investigate how we model three-dimensional shape, where we reconciled the two different mechanisms used in the CAD and animation industries. And I've published on a range of interesting problems at the intersection of art, design, aesthetics, computing, and psycho-physics, where I have developed tools for artists, analysed abstract art, and worked on how different languages have evolved in their understanding of colour. I'm also invited to give regular talks on the intersection of AI, religion, and ethics.

I am proud to be a Fellow of three professional bodies: Engineering New Zealand (FEngNZ), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET), and the Institution for Mathematics and its Applications (FIMA). I am a Chartered Engineer in both New Zealand and the UK, and a member of three international computer graphics organisations: ACM SIGGRAPH, AsiaGraphics, and the Visual Effects Society.

Prior to joining Victoria I was, for twenty years, co-leader of the Graphics & Interaction Research Group at the University of Cambridge's Computer Laboratory. I returned to New Zealand in 2016 to be Programme Director of Victoria's Computer Graphics Programme and then became Dean of Victoria’s Faculty of of Graduate Research in 2019.
