Alfio is an internationally recognised scholar with a high-impact research profile in film and media studies. His work has established him as a leading authority in screen media and tourism, the globalisation of screen production, and creative practice research. 

His first monograph, Touring the Screen (2012), is widely regarded as foundational in screen tourism studies, with hundreds of citations. He is also the author of 'The Bloomsbury Companion to Peter Jackson' (Bloomsbury, 2016) and 'The Cinema of John Milius' (Bloomsbury/Lexington, 2021). Recently, he co-edited 'Audiovisual Tourism Promotion' (Palgrave 2022) with Diego Bonelli. 

Alfio is an award-winning film-maker who produced and directed a number of short films that have screened at festivals both in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas. Alfio is also the founder and director of the Aotearoa Poetry Film Festival (https://www.aotearoapff.com). As the first festival of its kind in Australasia, APFF has created a dedicated platform for poetry film, supporting both emerging and established artists. The festival has fostered strong connections between filmmakers, poets, and local communities, while also attracting hundreds of international submissions each year, thereby positioning Wellington as a key hub for this artform.

Alfio sits on the editorial boards of several journals and book series including the International Journal of Creative Media Research; Media Peripheries, the Journal of Italian Cinema and Media Studies and the Bloomsbury Contemporary Filmmakers Series.
