BIO

I am a coastal ecologist primarily interested in understanding the impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems and food systems and actions that can support a resilient future. My wide-ranging scientific curiosity and the diverse needs of coastal communities lead me to work across traditionally distinct ecosystems (intertidal and nearshore subtidal zones), weave different knowledges and ways of knowing (ancestral knowledge, western science), and probe mechanisms across scales (from organisms to social-ecological systems).

I have arrived in Aotearoa New Zealand from British Columbia, Canada. I grew up in Victoria (WSÁNEĆ and lək̓ʷəŋən territory), where I completed an undergraduate degree (Honours Chemistry, last-minute Major Biology) at the University of Victoria (not to be confused with Victoria University), with a formative four-month term spent at Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre doing field courses. From there, I moved to Vancouver (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, səlilwətaɬ, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm territory) to complete a PhD in Zoology at the University of British Columbia with Dr. Christopher Harley and a postdoctoral fellowship at Simon Fraser University with Dr. Anne Salomon.
