BIO

New Zealand literature is my main teaching and research interest. This year I have a chapter coming out on short fiction in Aotearoa/New Zealand (in Brill's Handbook of Short Fiction), and last year edited a collection of essays on new poetry in Aotearoa (Te Whāriki, with Anna Jackson and Robert Sullivan). In 2024 I published Forms of Freedom: Marxist Essays in New Zealand and Australian Literature (Otago UP), and over the years have published on the novel and politics (in A History of New Zealand Literature, 2016), the short story (in The Oxford History of the Novel in English, 2017) and poetry and history. I am interested in working with students on any aspect of New Zealand literature and from a range of theoretical perspectives. My current project is a study of arguments around and in poetic form in Aotearoa. I also work on Australian and Canadian literatures.

My training was as a modernist, and I remain interested in global modernisms (as periods, problems, ambitions...), and Science Fiction. I welcome supervision requests in these areas, and around psychoanalysis and literature.

I sit on the editorial boards of the Journal of Australian, Canadian, and Aotearoa New Zealand Studies and Counterfutures, and am an Associate Editor of the Year's Work in English Studies. I'm also the Deputy Editor of the Journal of New Zealand Literature.
