BIO

Dr Dugal McKinnon is a composer and sound artist whose output encompasses electronic, acoustic and text media, and often interweaves these. His collaborative creative practice includes numerous audiovisual projects and sound-based installations. As a scholar his research has focused on experiential and theoretical aspects of sound-based art, as well as on acoustic-ecological concerns. He has held composer-in-residence positions at the Institut für Elektronische Musik und Akustik (Graz, Austria), the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie [Centre for Art and Media Technology] (Karlsruhe, Germany), the Studio for ElectroInstrumental Music [STEIM] (Amsterdam), and the Lab for Electroacoustic Music Research and Applications, Ionian University (Corfu, Greece). He holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham (UK) and teaches sonic art, composition, and sound studies at the NZSM where he co-directs the Lilburn Studios for Electronic Music. He is also a co-director of the Aotearoa Audio Arts festival, a platform for the presentation and promotion of sound and audiovisual arts in New Zealand.
