BIO
I work to increase knowledge of natural hazards and their effects with particular focus on the active caldera volcanoes in Ahi Tupua (central Taupō Volcanic Zone): Taupō and Ōkataina. I use seismological methods to understand the interplay of magmatic and tectonic processes through the development of earthquake catalogues and seismic imaging. I also have extensive experience in the deployment and magement of seismograph networks across Aotearoa New Zealand, including around the Taupō, Marlborough, Southern Alps, and Fiordland areas.
Throughout my research, I work closely with partners both locally, nationally and internationally to ensure that the results of my analyis are as useful and useable as possible. This includes colleagues at other universities, Earth Sciences NZ, and local Iwi. I am an external advisor for the Aotearoa New Zealand Volcano Monitoring Group, including contributing to expert advice for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on future unrest and eruption scenarios at Taupō. I have worked to co-produce my research including working in partnership with Tangata Whenua during seismic data collection as part of a multidisciplniary team of Iwi researchers, emergency managers, social and physical scientists. I also have a strong interest in science outreach including most recently the Seismometers in Schools programme and the Royal Society Te Apārangi Powering Potenial Programme.
