My research explores the timescales, chemical processes and evolution of planetary and Earth systems, spanning some of the youngest volcanic events on Earth to the birth of the solar system. As a geochemist, I develop and apply high-precision mass spectrometry techniques - measuring trace elements and isotopes to read the ‘fingerprints’ preserved in geological and environmental samples. My work focuses on three complementary areas: tracking magma assembly and ascent at silicic volcanic centres (supervolcanoes) like Taupō to understand volcanic hazards, analysis of the components preserved in primitive meteorites to study early solar system formation, and using non-traditional stable isotopes (e.g., strontium, δ88/86Sr) to track marine biogeochemical cycles and ocean responses to climate change.
Day-to-day, I lead the Geochemistry Laboratories in SGEES where I oversee the operation of three high-precision mass spectrometers (including TIMS and Sector-Field ICP-MS), associated ultra-clean laboratories and chemical safety under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act (HSNO). Teaching, training and mentorship are central to my work. I teach 4th-year geochemistry, supervise individual directed study projects and train undergraduate, postgraduate, and visiting researchers in clean-lab methodologies and isotopic and trace element analysis.
I collaborate widely within Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. If you have an enquiry regarding facility access, technical collaboration, directed study or postgraduate research opportunities (BSc Hons, MSc, PhD), please get in touch.
