BIO
I am a scholar of Religion with wide-ranging interests and teaching experience, specialising in religion in New Zealand and contemporary religious change. My research addresses historical and contemporary impacts of religion, with a particular focus on cultural, ethical, and political questions in modern Christianity. Recent writing traverses a range of issues in these fields, including work on violence and peacemaking, missions, secularism and secularisation, religion and welfare, activism, and childhood.
My most recent volume, Pacifying Missions (Brill, 2023), examines ideas of peace and peacemaking in nineteenth-century Christian missions and their entanglement in dynamics of violence and colonial expansion. This work builds on an earlier 3-year RSNZ Marsden Grant. I contribute to the NZ Attitudes and Values Study led by Professor Chris Sibley (Auckland), working on religion-related questions. I am currently engaged in several projects focused on religion in Aotearoa and the Pacific, including work on Atheism, and forms of Christian activism.
