BIO

My main areas of expertise are Higher Education and Language Education. My research interests include vocabulary learning, processing, and use, the bilingual lexicon (representation and processing), and reading. My research is situated across language education, second language acquisition, and cognitive psychology. I use quantitative research methods from applied linguistics, cognitive psychology & education to study, predict, and influence language learning and to understand bilingual processing.

I am currently an Associate Editor of Language Learning and Frontiers in Language Sciences: Psycholinguistics. I also serve on the Editorial Board of Studies in Second Language Acquisition, CALICO Journal, and RELC Journal, among others. I am on the Executive Committee of the NZ Association of Applied Linguistics (ALANZ).

My research projects include:

  • Learning first and second language vocabulary (from reading and listening, and deliberate learning)

  • Bilingual processing in reading

  • Cross-language influences in lexical acquisition and processing

  • Reading comprehension and its component skills

  • Eye movements in reading in the first and second language.
