I am delighted to join Te Herenga Waka Victoria Univtersity of Wellington in January 2026.  I have a particular interest in health quality standards and Māori Health.  My research focusing on 'good care' in a medical/surgical setting using hermeneutic phenomenological approach lays a foundation for health practice requirements.  My Iwi affiliation is Kāi Tahu.  I have just completed a research project (funded by the HRC) looking at the implications for Māori of the Ngā Paerewa health and disability services standard NZS8134:2021.  I completed qualitative research on the effects of the vaccine mandate for health workers in New Zealand (funded by the Ministry of Health).  I have published a number of articles on the development of graduate entry masters students from initial enrolment through to recognition as a registered nurse.

I led the review of the Registered nurse scope and competencies on behalf of the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ), which were implemented in January 2025, publications are in press describing this process.  I was an inaugural member of Komiti Māori (formal committee of NCNZ).  I am co-chair of Kawa Whakaruruhau Wharangi Ruamano (KWWR) - the national Māori nurse educators and academics rōpū.  In this capacity I am a signatory to a groundbreaking Partnership Investment Agreement between KWWR, the Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (CATSINaM) and the Council of Deans Nursing and Midwifery, Australia and New Zealand (CDNM).  Research to support indigenous academic staff, clinical staff and students is underway under this partnership.  I am co-chair of the National Nurse Leaders group (NNLg) in New Zealand.

As Head of Nursing (co-lead) at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) from 2023-2025, I worked with the Southern Cross Health Trust to co-design annual student scholarships; achieved improved success rates in the NCNZ state final exam; developed meaningful relationships with Māori nursing leaders nationally and locally; facilitated external engagement for academic staff; revitalised AUT Kawa Whakaruruhau Rōpū, positioning AUT to work closely with industry partners; achieved a significant increase in Māori academic staff; reshaped the way AUT nursing presents audit information contributing to three successful external reviews and one periodic review; celebrated AUT being recognised as Top 75-100 in the Shanghai international rankings (2024).

I supervise Masters, Doctoral and PhD level students using qualitative methodologies including research with a Kaupapa Māori approach.
