Prof. Joanna Merwood-Salisbury is an architectural historian specializing in 19th- and early 20th-century architecture, urban and interior design in the United States, with a focus on issues of labour and consumption. Her research integrates architectural and urban history with its social and political contexts. Her publications include books on early Chicago skyscrapers, the history of public space in the U.S., and an edited anthology on interior design theory. Her latest books are, Barbarian Architecture: Thorstein Veblen's Chicago (MIT Press, 2024) and an edited anthology, Rewriting American Architecture: Contesting the Myths of National Culture, with Charles L. Davis III and Kathryn Holliday (University of Texas Press, 2026). Joanna earned her PhD from Princeton University and an M.Arch from McGill University. She has served as the Book Review Editor (Americas) for the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians and as a member of the editorial board for AA Files and Fabrications. She currently sits on the editorial board of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, as well as the advisory board of the Historic Interiors Group (SAH). Joanna's research has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Graham Foundation, and the J. M. Kaplan Fund.
