BIO
Kelly Mitchell (Ngaati Maahanga) is an Assistant Lecturer in Law at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.
Kelly's research and teaching interests are in Indigenous legal theory, particularly Māori legal theory and how it considers tikanga as its own systems and within New Zealand’s imposed legal system. Her LLM thesis focused on consolidating a kaupapa Māori legal theory.
Following her role as the Student Editor of the Māori Law Review in 2020, Kelly served on the komiti of Ngā Rangahautira (the University's Māori Law Students' Association), and in 2022 as co-president of Ngāi Tauira (the University's Māori Students' Association). Her work in these roles aim to increase Māori student engagement, retention, and success at the University, particularly in the face of COVID-19 and growing financial inequity.
In 2022, alongside her komiti whakahaere, she coordinated the University's celebration of the 50th anniversary of Te Petihana Reo Māori, which was delivered by students of our Te Herenga Waka in 1972.
