I am a Professor at the School of Social and Cultural Studies with a particular focus on the sociology of health and illness. I am a a founding member of the Applied Research on Communication in Health (ARCH) group. My research activities include studies of cancer survivorship and healthcare decision-making. My books include The Cult and Science of Public Health: A Sociological Investigation, Public Health, Personal Health and Pills: Drug Entanglements and Pharmaceuticalised Governance, Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Containing and Expanding Therapeutic Possibilities, and I co-edited the Encyclopedia of Health Research in the Social Sciences. I am an associate editor for the Journal of Critical Public Health.
