BIO

Manuel Lujan Cruz (Supiano/Semon/CheChe) is a Pūkenga (Lecturer) of Media and Communication in the School of Arts and Media focusing on decolonization, Indigenous digital activism, and militarization discourse in the Pacific. He is also a former journalist and a co-founder of the Fanachu! Podcast.

Manuel is an Indigenous CHamoru of Guåhan from the village of Mangilao. He grew up in and around military bases in the continental US, Okinawa, and Germany. His research and teaching are strongly influenced by his positionality and experiences navigating identity and relations of power oriented by American militarization.

Manuel’s research has explored the role of news media in manufacturing consent over the rampant militarization in Guam and its political status as a non-self-governing territory (NSGT) of the United States. Most recently, Manuel published a chapter examining video conferencing platforms as a technology for solidarity building and resistance in The Routledge Handbook of Language and Social Media around the World.
