Marnie Lloydd is a leading specialist in international humanitarian law, with over a decade of frontline experience as a Legal Adviser and Delegate with the International Committee of the Red Cross across conflict zones in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Her research examines the international legal regulation of armed conflict, forced displacement and the protection of civilians, with a particular focus on international aid operations, as well as how law deals with foreign fighting and mercenary-related actors. She has published in leading international journals, including the International Review of the Red Cross (Q1), Citizenship Studies (Q1), and the Melbourne Journal of International Law (Q2).  Marnie's work bridges rigorous legal scholarship and real-world policy impact — informing governments, international organisations and civil society on some of the most pressing issues in contemporary international law related to armed conflict and war crimes.

Twice selected as a Global Scholar at Harvard Law School's Institute of Global Law and Policy, Marnie was also recognised as a Women Leader in Law by New Zealand's Borrin Foundation. Her doctoral and subsequent scholarship has received international prizes and distinctions, including an ANZSIL article prize in 2025. She was also an author and member of the Reading Committee of the ICRC’s Updated Commentaries on the Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocols. Marnie's work is enhanced by the support of her global networks – for example, in 2025, she was awarded visiting fellowships at the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) at Ruhr University Bochum, and the University of Copenhagen's ERC-funded MERCURY project on accountability for mercenary crimes. In 2026, she was appointed as Senior Research Associate with the University of Johannesburg, South African Research Chair in International Law (SARCIL), and Senior Researcher with the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights related to her contribution to the Academy's War Watch and IHL in Focus projects.

At Victoria Universit of Wellington, Marnie is the Co-Director of the New Zealand Centre for Public Law, and Director of Postgraduate Studies. A reflective teacher who strives to ensure that her teaching connects law directly to its human consequences, Marnie received VUWSA's supreme 'Lecturer of the Year' award in 2022.

External to the Law Faculty, Marnie serves as the Chair of New Zealand's National IHL Committee, and on the Council of the Australian and New Zealand Society for International Law (ANZSIL).
