BIO
Miguel Arnedo-Gómez is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Languages and Cultures (SLC). His research focuses on the representation of race and ethnicity in 20th-century Latin American literature and anthropology. He has recently published essays on the anthropological theory of Peruvian writer José María Arguedas, and the Cuban anthropologists Fernando Ortiz and Lydia Cabrera. His current research features a prominent comparative dimension: it analyzes the contrasts between 20th-century Latin American anthropology and the theoretical approaches of US and British anthropology. These include US acculturation studies and salvage ethnography, as well as British applied anthropology and its links with indirect rule. Miguel looks at the contrasts between Latin American, US and British anthropological schools against the background of the two distinct waves of European imperialism that produced them.
