I am a teacher-scholar of Islam (and religion, broadly) in the modern world, trained in the religious studies subfields of theory and method, ritual practice, material culture, and language-use. My research and publications to-date have focused on Twelver Shiʿi practice in Pakistan, with a particular focus on the Urdu-speaking Shiʿa in Karachi. I have designed and taught introductory and upper-level courses on Islam, South Asian religions, and theory and method in religious studies. I am currently working on a monograph on Urdu Shiʿi oratory in Karachi-- the monograph builds on twenty-six months of ethnographic and archival fieldwork that I have conducted since 2019. I have also begun preliminary work on a new broader project that traces the rise of Urdu oratory in the twentieth-century Indian subcontinent, either side of the 1947 partition of British India.
