BIO

I specialise in glacier-climate interactions at a variety of timescales, using a range of techniques including terrain analysis, geological dating methods, and physics-based numerical modelling.

Ultimately my work is motivated by the desire to inform the drivers, mechanisms, and impacts of past, present, and future climate change. To date my work has focused largely on glacier and ice sheet response at the end of the last ice age (between 20,000 and today), using a range of research techniques including geomorphological mapping, geological dating techniques, and physics-based numerical modelling. This global reorganisation of atmospheric and oceanic conditions shares many phenomena with current climate change (e.g. atmospheric and ocean warming, melting cryosphere, and sea level rise). It can therefore it can serve as a useful natural experiment to learn about how the Earth System responds to internal and external forcing.

Big-picture questions that motivate me include:

  • When, how fast, and why did Earth's last ice age end?
  • What are the drivers, mechanisms, and impacts of past abrupt climate change events?
  • What are the natural bounds of variability in the Earth System?
