BIO
I am quantitative social scientist interested in connections between language and cognition. I use a combination of psycholinguistic, computational, and statistical methods to explore how speakers create and interpret different types of creative language, such as sarcasm, metaphor, humour, and satire. I also investigate the development of lexical and syntactic knowledge when learning an additional language.
I received my PhD in Applied Linguistics from Georgia State University in 2018 and my MA in Rhetoric and Composition from Washington State University in 2012. I joined the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria University of Wellington in February of 2019. My CV, publications, and other information can be found on my personal website (linked on this page).
From January 2026 I am the director of the Language Sciences Program
