BIO

Tonya Sweet is an artist-designer and established design educator with expertise in planetary-centred, more-than-human, and sustainable design. Tonya's current research interrogates the tensions experienced as self-aware participants in the anthropocentric unravelling of our ecosystem. Through the generation of sculpture, collage and architectural installations, Tonya aims to locate alternative pathways to cultivate resilience in the face of an uncertain future. Tonya was granted a Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, and a Bachelor of Fine Art in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States. In addition to her career as a design educator, Tonya has over six years of professional experience as a furniture designer and fabricator. Her experience bridges three continents and a range of disciplines including: architecture and construction, furniture design and fabrication, exhibition design and fabrication, and the design and production of paintings, collages, and sculpture.
